The journey of Night Divers begins on a boat off the East Coast of Australia, moving on to New Zealand's Northland, before settling in Northern Ireland.
The moon and the foundation in personal experience are constants; voice, locations and time shift.Familiar landscapes become dangerous with changes of circumstance and perception.
The seeds you set in the garden
so long ago
(for my benefit as you put it)
have sprouted now,
inappropriately,
making holes in my carefully maintained lawn.
But the damage is more serious than it looks.
Roots have infiltrated the foundations.
The engineer has been here.
The report says the walls
that I thought were secure
will crumble soon.
The only option I have is to rebuild.
I am awaiting an estimate of cost.
Olive Broderick was born in 1969 and is originally from Youghal in Co. Cork. She travelled north to undertake the Creative Writing MA programme at Queen's University Belfast, setting in Co. Down in 2003. She has previously published Darkhaired (Templar Pamphlet, 2010) which was shortlisted for a Michael Marks Pamphlet Award.
