The Invention of Fireworks is Beatrice Garland's first collection, Shortlisted in the 2014 Forward Prizes for the Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection, and was the winning submission to the 2013 Straid Collection Awards, launched on 1st November at the Derwent Poetry Festival in Derbyshire and Keats House on 29th November.

The London launch was a packed event at Keats House, Hampstead on Friday 29th November, where Matt Bryden launched Boxing the Compass, his first collection.

 

The poems in the collection are mainly concerned with life and death in the natural world.

 

After a first degree in English Literature, Beatrice Garland worked as a National Health Service clinician, teacher and researcher in psychological medicine. She has won both the National Poetry Competition and the Strokestown International Poetry Prize, and was short-listed for the inaugural Picador Poetry Prize. She lives and works in London.
